Alloy Size Versus Tyre Size
« on: 30 November 2004, 12:59 »
Can any one give a quick explanation to this.

I have a vw with aftermarket alloys, my insurace company
are asking the difference between these and the original
wheels. Done some digging around and have some questions.
Can an alloy wheel quoted as 6Jx15 only have one width of tyre
fitted ie:185 or can 195 or 175 be fitted. If so how much wider
or narrow can you go before the wheel size changes?
5.5J or 6.5j or 7J.
What does the 6J stand for in laymans terms.
My situation is that from the spare wheel I can tell the
tyre size was 195 65 15's . What size wheel would this have been on.
The alloys on now are 205 55 16's. What size wheel would this be.
Obviously I know the basic diameter has increased by an inch.
But how as the width changed , if any?

Any help please.

Carlos.

the 6j is the width, so its 6" wide.

a lot of people put on smaller width tyres than those reccomended, for the stretched look.

your new wheels are 205mm wide, i think thats 7.5j. any combination of width and wheel size can be used so the 205 isnt in relation to the wheel size, 16".
