mk4 golf starting problems

 :sad:  hi everyone ive got a prob with my golf thats really getting me down, my car normally drives fine but if after a few short jorneys of stopping and starting the engine. it will struggle to start, sometimes coming up with an error (stop oil pressure) sometimes not and when it does eventually start it idles very badly for a min or two and i get sum grey petrol smelling smoke out the back for bout 5 seconds. after that thou its fine but of course i have to be carefull not to do too many short journeys or i have to leave engine running while goin shop and stuff, not good! can anyone help?

How are your oil and water levels? Any residue on the oil filler cap? Also check your spark plugs for condition and signs of oil.

oil and water levels fine so are the spark plugs, i will say this thou it ran perfect after i gave it full oil change but that only lasted 6 weeks. yes ive got gunk under the cap but its always had that and i heard it s normal for golf.

i'd start checking the breather system over (PCV) . which engine and year is it?

what is the breather system? where is it?
