Amps wont power up anymore...Help
« on: 13 March 2010, 09:26 »
Hi Folks

Suddenly my amps have stopped working. I thought it was a break in the blue 12v remote power lead from the head unit so I replaced it, and still it wont work. But the cazy thing is, when I connect the main 12v power lead from the battery, to the remote terminal on the amp (thus bypassing the head units remote turn on), the amp powers up.

I took the head unit to an audio specialist and after a quick look they said the head unit seemed fine. They suggested that perhaps the amps were drawing too much current for the head unt to switch them on.

Does this seem plausible?. The amps have been working fine for the last 6 months, and surely both amps wouldn't go at the same time?.
Any thoughts appreciated.

no, they are talking donkey crap.

It sounds like the remote output is blown on the HU... how many amps or devices ( in total)are you running from the HU remote cable?

Don't worry if you still want a switched live, there are various ones you can tap into in the car, you may get some slight problems doing it this way (on/off pop but there is a way around this) but the amp will still automatically switch on and off.

I had the same problem with my old head unit, the remote wire was only giving 11v which was not enough to turn the amp on!

Thank you guys for your comments. I really appreciate it. You have confirmed what I was feeling and that it is probably the head unit.

I am powering 2 amps. One is the 4 channel for the door speakers, and the other is the amp for the sub.

I'll have a look into finding another switched live as suggested. I assume getting the head unit fixed will not be worthwhile cost wise.

no, not really, unless it is warranty.

I have used the heater rear windscreen switch for a switched live for one of my amps, it works fine, I will find out what colour wire it is if you want. It is in a mk3 golf convertible though so yours may be different depending on model.
