Constant 'pinking' with 8v K-jet
« on: 10 March 2010, 19:28 »
Right, read on here somewhere (here being the interweb) that the Early MK2 K-jet wont run to good on normal 95 RON octane unless the ignition timing gets retarded about 6 deg to reduce the pinking - result, a little less power.

Also read it's possible to increase the octane rating by adding some octane booster to the fuel.

My problem is: Just filled up with super unleaded 97 RON to help try to eliminate the pinking, ran the car for about 15 miles (from work to home) and the pinking seems to be worse?!!
Almost as if there might be a plug lead loose that's connecting & re-connecting as I drive, it was quite rough at times.

Just wondering if I'm doing (or not doing) anything that should be changed with the super unleaded.

The timing at the mo' is spot on as I've had my timing strobe on it.
Any help would be great as I dont wanna endure any more kangaroo's for much longer.

It tells you in the owners manual to use higher octane fuel for my 16v, but ive only ever used morrisons or tescos normal petrol in mine and she still flies ( no pinking). Never tried it on higher octane to see what the difference was thou.

I would presume 95 RON petrol is a lot more refined now than in the 80s when these cars were designed and built but im no expert, just my own thoughts

diamond could be right. get that meter head cleaned up. search youtube etc for walk though. is both of your fuel pumps running? disconnect the biggie pump under the car behind the drivers seat and see if u can hear the in tank pump run when you turn the ignition on.

Possibly this, more likely it just needs a good service and the timing and fuelling set correctly. You handy with spanners? Timing is easy with a gun, fuelling you can get set by a garage. May also be worth checking the Vac advance is still working correctly.
