How much?
« on: 07 March 2010, 18:09 »
Hey all,

Just wondering how much people would expect to pay to get a 1.8T fitted to a cabby. I have found an engine and gearbox complete and was just wondering how much you would think it would be to have a fitted - properly  I'm led to believe it's pretty tricky.

Also, does anyone know of anybody good and trustworthy in around Stockport / Manchester who could do this

Cheers

Yeah I've used Awesome for loads of stuff in the past going back to when it was in the garage at the back of their house :)

Will give them a tinkle, I stopped using them really as they were getting more and more expensive and didn't really seem to give you deals for being a long standing customer (for instance they wanted £180 for brake parts which I bought from GSF for £90, the guy at GSF said that awesome buys thiers from there too) - worth an ask though.

One of the original founder members of awesome (now of PSI tuning I believe) wants £5200 for this which I can't help thinking is a little steep, albeit I have been told that it's not far from being reasonable

Who knows

That will obviously be supplied as well as fitted.  Steep like and I've heard of alot cheaper but you get what you pay for I imagine!

I've been to awesome a few times and I think there pretty steep, I'm originaly from round that way myself you see

I don't think Awesome would be interested in that sort of work anymore.

Take a read of this http://www.qpeng.com/conversion_guide.html to give you and idea of what is required.

Really need to find somewhere you can trust to do work like that. So many variables as well depending on the condition of the base car, condition of the donor engine, end spec required etc etc :)

Thanks JV, yeah i've seen that before, i'm led to believe the main problems are with the mounts and also the modifications needed to the driveshafts and also the management - preferably would like to use the original management rather than an aftermarket one as i've heard people have had real issues on setting the fueling up properly - always having flat spots somewhere in the rev range and also the original clocks working properly. I have contacted a few places regarding this mod and ideally would like to use a place which is reasonably local and well known for good mod work, but they have come back with a quote of £5500 + VAT no map & without exhaust. They want an extra £500 +VAT for any paint in the bay (non smoothing) and £400 +VAT for exhaust - total bill before looking at the brakes (which is obviously going to be needed) of £7520, can't help thinking that's more than a little steep  especially when you can get a rebuilt engine and gearbox delivered for £2K

When it comes to end result, i'm just looking for a nice clean look with standard engine and reasonable exhaust - 240 horses will be enough in a front wheel drive car I think  not interested in smoothing etc as I want a fully functioning car WITH a heater  just want to make sure the bay is free from marks and rust, not that you can see any rust other than whats on the original engine. The car it's going into has been owned and looked after by me for 10 years now and has covered less than 80K so is pretty well sorted. Just want to re GTi it as i'm getting rid of my bike this year

Have you considered the 2.0 16v? Very easy to install any you could always turbo it at a later date?
