fuel consumption
« on: 03 March 2010, 19:09 »
Hi guys, im new here just bought a mk3 16v last tuesday and finished my 1st tank of fuel. 43 litres got me 212 miles! doesn't seem much to me, think it works out to 25mpg. Was mostly short journeys between 1-4 miles at low speed. Interested to know how this compares with others? Its got an induction kit and stainless exhaust i dunno if this worsens economy? Am considering swapping back to standard airbox? i know i shouldn't buy a gti and expect 40mpg but i hoped for a bit more than 25

Hi there,  well i think you'll hear similar mpg's from other valver owners here, sounds about right really although depends a lot on how you drive it..

sounds spot on to me with a moody zorst and an induction kit. so you're aware induction kits are actually a waste of time. do a search on here for air box modifying. My 16v sees 40-45 mpg at 70mph cruising on a motorway and i don't have a zorst or induction

I've got an 8v and short journeys at low speed destroy my fuel consumption, 25mpg sounds about right for that kind of driving. Take it for a longer run at a decent speed and see what you get, should be much better.

+1 - my "short" run to work is stop start on backroads and GTI struggles to get to 30mpg on it - however on the longer version (A roads - 50 ish) - 35mpg is easy.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

my old abf used to average around 23 mpg on short trips    yet mid thirties once warmed up so not much worse than the 8 valve really if at all.

Sounds about right, i've a 96 16V and get between 25 to 30 mpg, depending on the weather and how it's driven etc.

the golf handbook quotes 35mpg for a steady 50, and 30mpg for a steady 60, 25 for 70 etc

Yeah not so keen on induction although the noise is quite nice wiv exhaust- sounds like a subaru lol. Anyone got an airbox and all the necessarys to change back or anyone fancy doing a swap for a cone filter?
