Hi, i have browsed this site a few times in the past but only joined today after buying a Mk2 Golf GTI 16v on e-bay for the sum of £352 ! Its got 10 months MOT but i have no idea of the condition, picking it up sometime this week. It is going to be a dedicated track car but need to be able to drive to & from track. Brands Hatch & Lydden are my local ones. I'm hoping once i've stripped it out it might go a bit better with less weight. I want to do this track car on a small budget & not really go mad so i'm looking at a cheap set of coilovers & G60 brakes,ARB's,strut braces & bucket seat for now. Maybe a 2.0 bottom end next year depending on how much use i get out of the car.
I have done quite a few trackdays over the last 6 or 7 years but trying to comprimise with a car that is for the road aswell & this doesn't really work. Had a 3dr Sierra Cosworth with big brakes,coilovers,350bhp,R888's etc etc & that was fun for 4 yrs. Changed to a M3 Evo & modded brakes , suspension + track wheels with R888's, only did 2 trackdays in this & 4 laps of the Ring. I found that with these cars it got expensive modifying them for track & was always worried about crashing them.
I have a Volvo V70 R manual awd (the later 2003 model with 300bhp) which i have had for 3yrs & is the family transport, i also have a facelift 2000 BMW M5 E39 as a bit of a toy & hope to go back out to the Ring in this, its a beast of a car !
So any tips for improving the handling/performance of the Golf on a small budget would be good, i'm hoping that with it being quite light once i've stripped it it should be good fun on trackdays & it won't matter too much if it gets a few dings or even a big ding !
