Hi all,
After looking under the bonnet of my rarely used cabby the engine is looking pretty sorry for itself, I know that around the water pump needs rebuilding and there's loads of surface rust etc (not used for around 2 years). The car has covered less than 80K so I will probably properly rebuild this, but this obviously means taking it out. I've been thinking for some time about possibly changing the engine for one with a little more poke, and was hoping for peoples input as to which one people would go for. I can see many threads on here about the 2.0L 16V but I quite fancy a 1.8T, there's even a thread for a TDi - which would be good. I know the 1.8T is a pain to fit physically, with loads of bespoke stuff being required (far outside my skill set). There is a garage pretty close to me but they want £5K to supply and fit one, which I thinks more than a little rich - the guy is meant to really know his onions though (founder member of Awesome Gti). I know that the cabbies aren't exactly designed to be quick but I do think that the standard engine is a little underpowered given the outputs of modern vehicles - if i'm going to take mine out, I think that's the time to address the power issue, as well as the brake cylinders etc etc could proove to be expensive this

To be honest I think I'm wanting something a little quicker as I've decided to sell my bike this year

I have seen an 1.8T engine / gearbox from a 2007 A3 which has covered 17,000m locally for £1200, with that in mind the aforementioned £5K really is steep IMO
All inputs are welcome here!!!!!, also if anyone knows of reliable people around Stockport / Manchester with the skill set to do / help me with this for me that would be great also.
Cheers all.
