Car serviced today - what a difference
« on: 06 February 2010, 20:44 »
Well with 50k miles now showing on the GTI, I decided to treat it to a big service - can't believe what a difference it has made to the car, it was obviously in need of some TLC!

Completed today:

Oil and filter (Castol Edge 5W/30)
Fuel filter
Air Filter
Spark Plugs
Pollen Filter
Discs and pads front and rear
Coil pack x 1 (old one looked a bit suspect)
New bonnet catch & sensor (old one had broken)

Biggest difference is the brakes. The discs that came off were in a right state and had fallen away terribly on the inside edges. With the new ones fitted and bedded in, the difference in braking performance and pedal feel is night and day.

Replaced one of the coil packs because we noticed on the last service that it was all rusty/corroded on the end. The was running fine but it did seem to be struggling to start in the morning - not sure if this was the reason though!

Needless to say, the car is like new now!

Have you had the cam lobe follower checked yet?

Nope. But i'm getting the cambelt and water pump changed in a few months time, so will ask them to do this.

What exactly do they check - is there a known issue?

They pop out the follower from the fuel pump. It is a known wear part and some have had them break in pieces in extreme cases. Yours should be fine, but the follower is less than £20 and the labour to check it will be more, so may as well just swap it for a new one if you do check it.

The follower wears through constantly pushing against the cam on the end of the camshaft. a remapped car will tend to get more wear and a car with a HPFP even more wear. Some early cars had "chocolate" cam followers and wore very quickly. The small amount of wear will mean that actual fuel rail pressure will always be lower than requested fuel rail pressure and the worse the wear, the worse the gap.

Thanks for the advice Hurdy!

I am hoping that as my car is an 07MY, not remapped and running the normal fuel pump that it won't be a problem.

Probably worth getting it checked though seeing as they will be having it apart.
