Engine Swap?
« on: 31 January 2010, 20:47 »
Hello I'v just turned 17 and am looking for a car, and have loved the mk2 gti for god knows how long, but i have no hope in hell of affording the insurance at the mo. I was wondering if its possible to swap out the 1.8 with say a golf 1.3 or even a polo 1.1?

Cheers! lewis

just buy a 1.3 mk2 mate

even though you'd be downsizing the engine, you'll pay more for a modified car than you would for the standard 1.3.

It be easier to make the smaller engined car look like a gti, evebn though doing that doesnt look right. rather than destroying a gti. Im 19 with 2 years no claim and 1 years experience and its still going to be £1800 for me.

dang, i thought i will lower the insurance for sure. Its just you tend to find the gti are better looked after then the smaller engined models.

depends on the insurance company, hic base insurance on the car the engien is from, so a gti with a 1.3 will cost same as a 1.3, as long as you make no engine mods

Like 'eck.

finding a 1.3 or even a 1.0 that's been in some dead person's garage for many years isn't that hard.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

the 1.0 or 1.1 mk2's are really weird and quite rare creatures,  i freind had one there inpressivly quick off the line for what they are as the gears are inpressivly short, but there top end is naff all it revved out at about 80 and it absoultly guzzeled fuel,  the 1300's are much much better.

when insurance sorts it's self out you find a bent lupo gti and nick it's motor :)
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
