i had one on my '90 gti and it did sweet fanny adams! my car was pretty standard apart from a full exhaust, decent air filter and a piper 285 cam. but once it was on i couldn't be arsed to take it off as it certainly made it no worse.

then a friend of mine bought an earlier gti ('86) and kept going on about them so i gave him mine and his fuel consumption went up loads, especially on longer runs ( as you'd expect) and he's sold on it.

the general concensus is they seem to work better on older, completely standard models. its your choice really. the only people i know who think they make any difference have been on early mk2 golfs. wouldn't know much more than that though.....but again had no effect good or bad on mine.

its there to regulate and filter the fuel going into the engine so you use the right amounts and its clean but to be honest thats half of what fuel injection does anyways so unless your running on a carb wont see much of nothing.

i didn't think it had anything to do with the fuel? the idea behind it is to cause turbulence in the inlet manifold which apparently makes the same amount of air/fuel mix burn better and more efficiently thus lowering your fuel consumption as you get more performance from the same amount of mixture. they do work better on carb models though.

I agree, it made fik all difference to my mk2 valver other then a rather annoying howling noise on tickover.

I got pi$$ed off with this noise in the end and wound it back in, so it just sits there lookin pretty doing bugger all now.

if it was making a howling noise on tick over it wasn't set up right! from memory you screw it back in til it just stops howling then screw it in a further half (or quarter?) turn so its quiet then it should only suck when you accelerate or decelerate. that could be one of the reasons you didn't notice any difference!

but as veedubgti16v said they seem to work best on older carb models. in principle its a great idea with similar designs around for decades but in practice on modern(ish!) cars they don't make enough of a difference!
