Sticky Gearbox?? Help!
« on: 26 January 2010, 21:59 »
Hi,

I have a 1.4 Mk3 and recently the gearbox has developed a few problems. There is a rattle/grinding noise immediately after the engine is started unless the gear knob is held firmly in neutral, then it crunches slightly when first going up through the gears (only the first time!). Also when driving for long periods the gears become 'sticky' and it can sometimes be difficult to change gear.

About 12 months ago the original gearbox went and I replaced it with a second hand one and had a new clutch put in and it has been perfect until a few weeks ago.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what it could be and as to whether it is likely to be terminal?? I don't really want to end up having to change the gearbox again because it was really difficult to source one that would fit!

Thanks in advance

Dom

yours has the 085 type box which is common (polo's,ibiza's etc use this) but I'm not sure of any issues these have..
But common with all vw boxes you should check the alignment and also give it some fresh oil
