head gasket check

how do i check condition of head gasket on my 16v gti or are there any tell tale signs its on its way out

compression test, check for mayo like substance in oil+ oil in coolant ect.

regular cut outs and loss of power are a sign. loss of water and coolant are a clear sign too. bear in mind that the oil cap might have white crap on from general condensation though. as said, if your unsure or worried get a compression test done from a decent garage, not some cowboy. i found out the hard way on my 16v so dont leave it  :cry:

like said abit of mayo on the cap is normal if you drive short journeys quite often.

If your not loosing water and your water pump is working fine then why worry??

To check the water pump is working, Rev the engine from under the bonnet while looking at the water bottle, if you see water flow then dont worry.

a pressure test is the only thing i would trust.......all my car's mayo up quickly due to the type of driving I do!
