HELP
« on: 19 January 2010, 22:10 »
Hi all...Had my golf for 3 years, engine is standard apart from an induction kit and s/s exhaust system.Running great untill about 2 months ago.Started running total crap, hard to start, wont idle when cold and using tons of fuel(18MPG).I got it on the computer and it comes up with these 3 faults...

Idle air control valve
Throttle postion sensor
Speed sensor

So I replaced the air flow mass meter and got errors erased.Car went great for a couple of weeks then back to the same.(same 3 faults on computer)

Then I replaced the throttle body.I got one from the scrap yard ,made sure surface was clean and smooth.Fitted it and got errors erased.Car ran like a dream, real responsive and getting around 27MPG.Finished my work today, fired the car up and back to running crap(my friend says this is it in safe mode).Got my friend to put it back on the computer earlier on and guess what the same 3 faults.

Hope someone can help,cheers Chris

Forgive me for asking, but why did you replace the air flow meter when the fault codes pointed to three other components?

Paid an auto spark to check it out before I knew my mechanic friend had the diagnostic equipment. The auto spark guy told ,e he thought it was that.I started think to myself that he never had a clue. This is the little black square sensor on the inlet hose?

Disconnect battery for a at least an hour to re-set ECU
Replace ECU relay (number 30 under fuses) - just in case.

Well, first I'd check the idle valve - particularly as you're having poor idling problems.

Thanks all, will try your suggestions.Got the fault errors erased earlier on the computer, car going sweet again but how long will it last?I got a print out of the faults,so im going to try my luck and walk into a VW garage to speak to a mechanic.
