GTi 8V No sparks
« on: 18 January 2010, 16:46 »
Hope somone can help with this one.
Was driving the Golf and as I  pulled into a parking bay it just stopped. No spluttering or missing - it was like I'd just turned it off.
There was a clicking noise from the fusebox and I noticed the throttle body was twitching all the time the ignition was switched on.
First thought was ECU relay and basic fault finding revealed no spark but plenty fuel.
The car was recovered home and I stuck a new ECU relay in but no joy so a new coil went in - no difference.
One mobile diagnostic session later and he thinks it could be the ECU itself.
Anyone think of anything else before I send the ECU away?
Would a faulty crank sensor give these symptoms?
One other thing I've noticed is when I've been turning it over, if I turn off the ignitin then turn it back on
(without cranking the starter) the engine jumps as if its getting a random spark -  any thoughts on the problem appreciated .
And sorry if it seems I'm just a newbie jumping in with loads of questions - I'm a long time lurker and have already solved a few issues by reading some of the excellent posts here - but I can't find an answer to this one!  Cheers.

crank sensor will stop it sparking but i doubt it would make the TB twitch when the engine isnt turning over

Hi there..
I doubt you'll find a straight forward answer to your problem,
It could be a host of different things but really you need to do more searches and get down to basics working from the top (most obvious first) and whittle it down until you source the prob..
Re mac7's point.. get under the bonnet and look for something general first..
Relays No. 30 and 167 are known suspects but it's still guessing at this stage..

Let us know if you progress,

Christo

Hi there,
Can't add much to the fault finding but have a Crank position sensor and genuine VW fuel pump relay (167) for sale if you go for a change with these parts!
Also have you checked leads from coil to dizzy for spark? Coil lead off dizzy place on block and crank. Does this produce spark... also three pin plug on Dizzy, all three wires ok, not loose? Had issue with these which meant plug needed replacing!
I'm defo not expert but just passing on what probs I had with mine recently.
Good luck!

I think you have a wiring issue or the ecu has died.

Could be a problem with a the ignition barrel wiring?

Ditto flexiblefish98 - does the king lead spark?

Is there 12v supply to the coil?  Is there a good ground from the coil to the engine?  Is there good ground generally?

Is there 12v (I think its 12v, but might be 5v) supply to the cam sensor in the dizzy, and ditto ground comments above.

Is the trigger switching on the coil (the third wire)?

James
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.
