Can I have more than one iPod connector?
« on: 23 January 2010, 15:43 »
Picking up my GTi next week and it has the armrest iPod prep but a) it doesn't take my iPhone very well, and b) the well documented lack of track info is annoying. My old GTi had a simple Aux socket in the arm rest, which is blanked out on this new one. Is it technically possible to retro fit the Aux socket without affecting the existing set up?
And I'm seeing references to something called MDI. Is this a 3rd option?

You seriously need to consider going for either an aftermarket head unit or the new RNS510. Both would give all the track info etc that you need. I originally had the VW ipod dock and can honestly say it was the biggest piece of sh!t on the car and a waste of space and money

Rant over!

It already has the RNS510 - that was an essential requirement. But from what I can make out, even this doesn't display artist info from the iPod dock. Is that right? Does anyone know if the MDI will show artist/playlist info on the screen? I guess I'd have to navigate around my music using the iPod itself rather than the RNS510 screen, but that's fine.

PS I was really pleased that I'd found a car with iPod prep, until I tried it out and have to agree with you Hurdy - what a pile of pants.

Give Phil Mcavity a PM. He has the RNS510 and I'm sure he gets all the IPOD info on his

yes you are right, the RNS 510 still treats the iphone as a 'CD player' and just displays track number, no other info.  Im pretty sure MDI solves this, but its £250.  waste of money.

Im not 100%, but I dont think the dock connector will even charge your iphone, as original ipods and mk1 iphones used a different pin for charging and VW never updated it when apple changed the pin in the dock connector in 2008, as far as im aware.
