non starter
« on: 15 January 2010, 22:32 »
Ok, my car hasnt been starting well for the last few weeks.

it would turn over but not start without the help of a battery starter kit thing that you charge at the mains. Today this failed to work too.

(once it was running it would be fine, and often start more then once in a day.)

I have had the AA out and they couldnt diagnose it at the side of the road.

It has a spark, and fuel, and (with the aid of the pack) battery.

The car seems to be flooding as the spark plugs are soaked in petrol thus causing it not to start.

any ideas what to do next?

thanks

Checked earths? Think one of the common ones is the earth to the gearbox?

And how old is your battery, our lovely weather sometimes kills them at this time of year

I have had this problem, check all your breather pipes running from your air box. I bet one is disconnected somewhere.

Surely the AA man would of realised if it was the battery, :embarassed:
But even so, A new battery is always a wise choice 2 make 1st of all,
When i purchased my 16v 10 years ago, It was crap at startin in cold weather, So I  swapped the main power lead 2 the starter motor on mine, Used some nice thick stuff from a sparky at work, Had no trouble at all since,
-13 last week started 1st time no messin,
No guts No glory,

check the meter head plate should lift up quite easy like that.  i had a prob w the meter head on my valver, the flap was very hard to lift up, the needle that controls the fuel flow was sticking causing it to flood, so i took it out and cleaned it w petrol.

cheers guys.

yeah i doubt it is the battery, as it permanently had a replacement power pack thing attached.

The earth to the right hand side of the bay (linking the bonnent and wing together) has snapped, could it be this? I wouldnt think it was that important.

Cheers i will check the metering head and air box pipes.

when was the last time you serviced it, could be spark is weak due to worn plugs and/or leads, rotor arm/cap etc.  bonnet earth not important, supposedly its there for reducing radio interference.  certainly wont effect starting
