Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but like Shady, I'm not that mechanically minded. Will this fit on my '96 8v?

Yes but will need sleeving as a 8v is a smaller bore.

Sorry, I need a bit more enlightening please!! I can get a new back box/tail pipe for £160.00 fitted, but I was just wondering whether I could save myself a bit of dosh by purchasing this

Your standard exhaust is smaller so you will need to sleeve it up to suit.

That's a high price for just a second hand back box as well
