Removing drivers door - Difficult?
« on: 10 January 2010, 14:04 »
Anyone ever done this? Mine is damaged so I will be replacing it with one from a breakers. Ive done a tailgate swap before but it seems thats an easier job than what the door looks like it will be. Ive had a look about the forum the closest thing I can find is door card removal!! Ive got all the tools I need etc so just need a bit of advice maybe... cheers

Door hinges are a beeeeeeeeatch to get at!!!!!  I've bought tools and broke them in the process of trying to loosen/adjust the hinges!   I'm now paying to get driver's door re-hung during service in a couple of weeks.

If you can get at the hinges and loosen them off have a buddy there to support the door and re-hang the new one as they are very heavy.

BTW - They are XZN (triple square) 10mm fitting on the hinge bolts.

I have a nice set of XZN bits just like these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-Expert-21932-Tx-Star-pieces/dp/B0001K9R6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=diy&qid=1263144634&sr=8-1

Also bought a tool meant for the hinges off eBay but its made of plasticine:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Door-Hinge-Handle-Bit-Tool-Kit-VW-Porsche-Mercedes_W0QQitemZ160378406247QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint?hash=item25574c4567

There's also a tool specially for door hinges at this samstag company:
http://www.samstagsales.com/vwaudi.htm
(Look for "12149-XZ" on the page, but its $59!!!!)

I got annoyed / gave up and have asked a garage to do it for it me....  :embarassed:
