Bottom Pulley
« on: 05 January 2010, 16:58 »
Hi,

I have a mk2 GTi 8v and the bottom pulley that runs the alternator seems have separated. It looks like it is in two parts the centre that bolts to the crank and the outer part that runs the belt. The outer part is now spinning independently and is causing a metal squeak when the engine is running and it has also screwed up the timing mark completely.

Normally this would not be a problem I would just order a new one but the part is no longer available from VW. Is it possible to replace the pulley system with something off of a MK3? I have a 2e bottom end if that makes any difference.

I can live with the squeak for the time being (but it is getting worse) and set the timing off of the flywheel. I am just interested if anyone else has encountered this and how to over come the problem?

Cheers
Matt

what pulley setup do you hjave, MK2 or MK3? I assume MK2 from your description, if you want a MK3 pulley you'll also have to replace the alternator and pas setup with the matching MK3 stuff.

Yep, I have used the mk2 parts. Does this pulley have some sort of vibration dampener? If so it looks like it might have something to with this failing.

It looks like the mk3 route might be the only way to go.

Pretty sure the mk2 runs a harmonic damper so sounds like yours has sheared the rubber section. You should be able to get a new pulley from a breakers or compare the one on your 2E to the one on yours. If it looks the same, it probably is lol.

Sounds like you need a new belt not a pulley

Cheers for that. I though it looks like some sort of dampener.
I am going to try a couple of breakers and mates spare parts this weekend. The pulleys I got with the 2e seem slightly different but I will take another look and see if they line up.
