Battery died but why?
« on: 06 January 2010, 11:04 »
the battery on my 8v is about 14months old,  car started fine first thing this morning, so i drove it the short distance form my girlfriends house to home, got ready for work and half hour later the battery was completley flat, not even enough power to light the immobiliser led.  Could this purely be down to the cold or could there be some other problem thats drained it in such a short space of time??

alternator could be dead. my transit battery just up'd an died few months back for no reason whatsoever, turns out alternator had died. no warning lights, no nothing, just went!

also worth checking for bad earths.

Something really similar happened to me, battery 12 months old, battery light would come on until i revved the engine over 2k then go off for good.

Died on the motorway. 1 x new battery later, seem to be ok. Ive got a bad earth somewhere though, and it might be worth removing all the contacts between the alt and the battery and giving them a sand down.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Problem solved

during the time i was getting ready for work i heard someone trying to start a car, it was just turning over without firing, so i laughed to myself thinking unlucky for u.  however no one was trying to start a car at all, it was my car trying to start itself..... wtf your thinking.  well ive just put the newly charged battery back on my car and as i connected the second terminal, the starter motor engaged.(the ignition key was in my pocket at this time) .  what had happened is one wire on the starter motor had moved round on the bolt and arced itself thus making the connection to try and start.   im thinking it was fates way of telling me not to drive to work in these snowy conditions. so instead ive stayed at home and made 2 snowmen

Lucky you found it then when you connectedit up and it hadn't moved back away and then done it later on when you was away from the car again. Glad you found it straight away though bonus
