Exhaust system warning lamp came on today.....
« on: 20 December 2009, 23:42 »
As the titled suggests my exhaust warning light came on today, and when revving the car you get a kind of popping noise from the exhaust when you let off the accelerator. So anyway I rang my local dealership as the GTI book says to drive slowly to the nearest dealership and get the engine checked. The lady on the phone said not to drive it to the dealership and to ring the VW assistance people, as I have only owned the car for 3 weeks after buying it from a VW dealership and I have the road side assistance. So I ring them and the RAC came out, the guy plugs in his RAC Scan computer and it pops up this code “P0010 Camshaft Position Activator Circuit Bank 1” He says it’s not much to worry about and deletes the code. He suggests taking the GTI to the dealership as peace of mind as I have a years warranty so any repairs should be free. It’s a 05 reg and has done 48 thousand miles so the cam shaft hasn’t been replaced yet.

I just wanted to see if anyone on here had any idea what I should expect the dealership to do and if I should tell them to replace certain parts?

Thoughts people?

Oh as another thing I do have this 1000 mile 30 day exchange thing if any mechanical faults happen with my car, is it worth looking into that as I have until the 28th to take it up?

Well a little update, the car was parked at the girlfriends, so as I started it up to drive to my house the light came back on, so a trip to the dealers tomorrow to see what is going on. Lucky my boss at work is cool and dont mind me sorrting it out.

I had the lamp on a while back. Visited Indy who checked and reset for free.  It has never reappeared.

Will it clear itself? Could it just be dirty fuel?

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

Well after the light came back on I called out the dedicated VW assistance guys. He came and plugged in his computer and got a slightly different code than the RAC guy. It was something like open circuit in the cambelt area. He removed the engine cover and on the right hand side near the top right hand corner there is a sensor. Well it was snapped and only connected by a small bit. So he pushed it back together and put a cable tie around it to hold it on more securely. He then rang up my local VW garage and booked me in to get the part replaced, so in the end the car goes in to get fixed on the 29th. Also whilst the VW guys computer was plugged in it got an error code about the electric windows, so they along with the electric wing mirrors, that are playing up are getting fixed all under warranty. Gotta love the extended warranty.
