Exhaust System Light flashing
« on: 25 December 2009, 22:53 »
Hi Guys,

New Golf GTI MKV owner and first time poster but long time lurker! I love my Shadow Blue beastie!

I've only driven my GTI twice and after filling the tank up with fuel (BP Ultimate), I've noticed a problem.

It seems when I put my foot down, after a few times the Exhaust System light starts to flash and the car seems to lose power when accelerating - misfiring even.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Oz

The situation got worse last night.

Driving back home from South London, the car decided to lose all power, without warning, in the middle of the road and wouldn't restart. Luckily I pushed it to the side of the ride and called Green Flag to come and investigate.

The engine kept turning and wouldn't start at all - it seemed to be in some fail safe mode.

The mechanic from Green Flag was absolutely useless and didn't have a clue. So after 3 hours was finally towed back home!

The ESP, Exhaust System and Battery light is now on when the ignition is turned on.

No idea where I'm going to find a good VW mechanic today or tomorrow!

Was thinking about joining the RAC and getting them to do a home start.

Absolute nightmare!

What you need is someone with VAGCOM (fault diagnostic software) to plug in a read the fault codes that you have generated. Green Flag should really have done that which is a poor show on their behalf, I'm assuming he didn't have the software on his laptop (in which case I would cancel my policy with them and change to someone who does, like the RAC).

Once you have the fault codes we can take it from there. Where in the beautiful world that is South London are you?

The problem I find with Green Flag is that they use local mechanics. Hence they get to you quicker but the service is quite varied. He didn't have any diagnostic tools and couldn't solve the problem, so he simply towed me back home to North London - Camden area.

So I'm going to cancel them and call the RAC to perform a home start. Apparently you have to wait 24 hours before you can make a home call-out.

Luckily, I only bought the car a couple of days ago and the dealer has said that if the RAC can't resolve the problem then get the car towed back to his mechanic.

Hopefully it'll all be sorted!

You bought the car from a dealer? That should come with 1 years free VW breakdown assistance . . . .  .

Possibly a coil pack went faulty and sometimes they blow the fuse hence a non starter.
