Valve Cover on 1990 MK 2 8v gti
« on: 13 August 2003, 11:26 »
I am new to the Golf scene and would really appreciate some advice. I took my car into my local garage to have the Idle stabalization valve electrical connection fixed + the rubber seal between the valve cover and oil pressure valve? replaced. The car runs pretty well now but he told me that under the oil pressure valve, inside the rocker cover there is some type of valve/filter type of thing that is completley clogged with carbon etc. He says he would take the valve cover off and try and clean it or try and take it off the valve cover and replace it.

I am wondering whether anybody knows about this area of work and whether it would be better to change the whole cover completley. (Valve cover around ?45?).
+ is it possible to take this item off the valve cover?

Take the cover off yourself and clean it.

Just take the cover off and let it soak in a bucket off petrol to soften the baked in oil thats in the gauze inside the breather, I did this on my old Scirocco GT and it cleared it right out, also see if you can get it blown out with an airline after to insure its nice and clean.

Thanks Guys for your help. I took the cover off and gave it a good clean. Replaced it with new gaskets etc and changed the oil at the same time. Car feels much better - better idle and smoother running.

Cheers!
