fitting a stereo
« on: 01 October 2004, 23:12 »
just purchased a cd head unit for my mk3. Fitted it using standard conections on iso block. When you turn the ignition of the stereo stays on until you take the key out but when you get back in the car 30 mins later and turn it on all radio stations have been wiped. Is this to do with the permanent live or is it something else. Not that keyed up on electrics so keep your answers simple if possible. (ps) when i bought the car it had a nokia hands free kit fitted could this be to do with it. thanks in anticipation

sounds like it's wired for permanant live, but instead of actually being on a permanant feed it's wired to the ignition feed. that would explain the loosing stations thing. Unfortunally I don't know how they wire the mk3's as standard, but that would be my first guess. my circuit diagrams for the mk3 seem to be missing the radio section so that can't help either  >:(

On your ISO block are all the wires connected? I know on some of the blocks I've used the pins aren't in the right places so I've had to move them around a bit.

Hope that helps :)

that sounds right!

you have the ignition wire connected to the permanant
wire on the strero! either swap the 2 power wires over!

by getting a fine screw driver and sliding the terminals out and putting them in the right places!
this is normaly the case with stereos they wire up prerfect aprt from the power wires!

or you could depending on what make it is you can just have both wires live and ignition going stright to the live on the cars harness.... this is the same technique used if
you dont have an ignition on switch..........

this way your stereo is on all the time well until you turn it off...... basicly when you stop for petrol and take your keys out your stereo will carry on! i have mine wired up like this!

thi is a wiring harness for a panasonic stereo!
see the red wire this is the ignition feed wire but is also has a connector on it so you can connect the perminant live feed yellow wire to it and then the red wire conects to the live feed on your car which is connected to your ignition wire at the moment!

if you want your ignition to act as an on off switch for your stereo...... swap the 2 power wires over in the black iso connector!

i hope this sorts thing out!

about the hands free kit see in the pic the white connector theres an oarnge wire and just by it there a brown wire!

your mobile phone may be connected to this wire (depending on make +model +if its been fitted)
what this wire does is when your mobil rings it turns your stereo down!

the orange wire (if you have one) connects to your cars dash lights this makes your stereo panal light up when you turn yout lights on!

and the blue wire runs to your amp or power arial!

i'm a self taught stereo man!
it use to p*** me off doing faviours for friends relatives n getting fcuk all in return! >:( p****** about twisting wires taking ages to do! i did my ex mates brother in laws cavalier! it was raining the noise off the rain and me getting fcuk all out of it and it was taking ages! i didnt want to be there it was making me very frustrated! and p***** off! that left me ? 3 out of pocket! i used a iso to bare wire connector! he never give me any money!

dont mind giving advice tho!

ishould have charged him ?34.99! thats how much ice installers want! and thats not including adapters!

Cheers guys ;)
bought some bullet conectors and swapped the wires that way. Stereo does not come on with the ignition but at the press of a button we have sound and its holding the stations now. Thanks again
