gti not holding water....SOLD SOLD SOLD
« on: 27 November 2009, 14:20 »
right peeps i had this topic up a few week ago.  the was getting scrapped but im not giving it away for free so i might just fix it..

basically i was driving 1 day and i noticed steam i lifted the boonnet to find water gushing out of the exspantion bottle via the over flow''

obviously pressure is building up and forcing it out.  this lead me to the thermostat thinking it was shot and not opening.

changed that and still doin it.  weirdly the bottom rad pipe doesnt get hot before it gets to the stat so im thinking it may be air locked.

however when i was out at the car some dude said it could be the head as ive had a small water leak somewhere since ive had it and had to fill it up every 2 or 3 weeks.

any suggestions.

change the cap for a new one before you get too involved with the troubleshooting, have a read of the this as well, it'll probably need bleeding if it spat out a hefty amount of water:

If the head gasket has failed it can lead to water be blown out of the expansion tank.

yup as above, if hg blown between a piston and a waterway it'll pressurise the system till it either pops a coolant hose or overflows out the tank. VWs arnt prone to HG failure unless you let it overheat though.  Start with the cap and work your way from there, fingers crossed its something easy/cheap :)
