2007 VW Golf Mk 5 GT Sport 2.0 TDI 170.

Issue: Fault code 01486 displayed using Foxwell scanner with VAG software.

History: Vehicle was sat for a period without use. Battery was flat and when charged mulitple warning lights on dash: engine management, steering, ABS and ESP.

Codes cleared but steering, ABS and ESP remained. HVAC code also live but not concerned about this at this stage.

Steering angle sensor changed but did not resolve fault. Later identified the rear wheel speed sensors were sporadically dropping speed (a fault code recorded which cleared and came back). This was caused by the magnetic ABS pick up ring being damaged on both rear hubs (assume corroded to the wheel speed sensor and damaged in the same place when the vehicle moved after 2 years). Hubs replaced and and the steering angle was allowed to calibrate.

Now left with the 01486 System Function Test Activated fault. I've read/watched the Ross Tech process to complete the test drive, but either I'm not completing it correctly  or something else is wrong. As far as I can tell, all other faults are clear (less the HVAC).

I'm pressing the brake hard until the ESP light flashes then driving the car between 9 and 18mph whilst turning/holding less than 180deg. Left, right and both during the test same have been tried. Test completed within 50 seconds. Restrictions with space is a factor, using a local club car park.

I'm convinced this test just needs completing correctly, but not sure what I'm missing or doing wrong. Is it my method or is a more advanced code reader required?

I've searched for similar faults on the forum, but couldn't find an answer. Thank you!

Update: no comments so thought it useful to close the loop on this issue for future users. Yes, a more advanced code reader was required. My Foxwell could see the test, but unable to end it. I tried a Topdon, but this couldn't find the test. Finally used a Snap-On: under electronic brakes > Adaptation > find bank 103 > select until it reads Test Inactive > clear codes.

The manual method was tried muliple time and never worked. Car now ready for first MOT since 2023 🙂
