Winter tyres
« on: 12 November 2009, 16:41 »
Got a set of bridgestone tyres on my wife’s GTI, that are down to just over 3mm each.

Would ideally like a spare set of wheels and run some winter tyres (give me chance to get my 18’s refurbished) and make the winter school run a little safer

Any suggestion on ideal size of wheels and best make for winter tyres (mud and snow)

Cheers

Really love the GTI however I regret not buying another R32 (My wife does 200+ miles week on b roads (normally wet and with the occasional mud) so 4*4 would have been better

Recommended are 6x16 with 205/55R16 tyres. Or I guess you could use the sizes for the standard Golfs - 6x15 with 195/65R15.

thanks

Did a bit more research look like winter tyres don’t really come into their own until temp drops below 7 degrees – seems all-season tyres might be a better bet

will the 16 inch wheels fit (over the brake disks calipers etc)

Yes, the VW 16 inch steel wheels will fit over the GTI brake calipers. I'm not sure the 15's will though. I had 16" Continental Wintercontact tyres for my Passat which I only really used Dec-Feb or when over in Europe - they were great. Not sure what's recommended for the GTI - does it tell you in the manual?

I've just bought a set of four Inifinity M+S winter tyres 225/45 17 to fit to a spare set GTi alloys.
cost £236 which includes 10% CWU discount and fitting at local nominated large chain tyre dealer.

Will see this winter how they perform. Cannot be much worse than the Conti2s currently on car which are  absolutley trash in the snow and ice !!!
