Nightmare....
« on: 03 October 2004, 17:05 »
Here goes,

I have a new girlfriend (nope thats not it :D) and she tells me that her Bro has a MK2 golf. I said great what type. Dont know as most ladies would say and I said what he had done to it. She says quite a bit but its not running at the mo. I said to her that I would have a look at it for him and she said about 4 people have all ready have.

Any ways I pop round there yesterday to meet him and to have look at his golf, Nice golf 2ltr 16v been dropped on 16's G60 arches and big bumbers, new zorts, full leather looks the dogs. loads of engine work been done such as pollished head new rings and stuff. Spent about 3k on it

Im asked him what was up with it and he said that it was just cutting out when driving. I thought it would just be a few simple checks and get her running. :-\

He gives me the keys and I open the door as the C/L was not working due to the batt been disconnected. I open the door and see all the wires haghing out form under the dash, Im mean ALL the wire's even the E/W wires and all.

I said to him what on earth has gone on here????? he siad that one of the guys pulled it all out to try and get it running. I said to him why?? if it was cutting out you would need to check under the bonnet not the dash ::) Then he says to me wait till you look under the bonnet. In the mean time i was sorting out what wires were for what, alarm, windows dash ect and then i had a look under the bonnet.

I open the bonnet and it was not to bad, all the pulg leads was off, all the air stuff was off even vacume pipes, timing cover, its had new distrubeter and plenty of other bits so I put it all back on.

I Looked in the head where the plugs go and they was in there so put the leads back on. I aked him to crank her over and nothing. not one turn from the starter. So i decided to check that there was power going down to the starter. so I get me tester out and just reaching down there to test the wires while he was holding the key and BANG.

I got a smack in th head and bits moved. I jumped and nocked over my coffee. It turned out that the plugs was just sitting in there. not even done up and one of em hit me in the head, (just as well I had my warm hat on other wise i would have more than a pea rolling round in there ::)) I found two plugs and the other two was over in next doors garden :o the thing that gets me was that there was no power going to the starter so must of just been the spark in the chamber that blow em out. it took off the dizzy cap and all. Lucky for me hat.

I said that I would not be able to sort this mess out as too many cooks spoil the broth and this has been BURNT.

What do you think he should do????

He has been offered ?1500 for it off a mate. I said it you got offered that then take it but also I siad that I would have a load of bits off it. ;D

He wants to keep it i think but does not know what to do with it. But saying that he was looking at the online auto trader last night for more golfs 8)

What do you think??

Not sure what the real problem is here. Sounds like there has been a lot of damage done by various mechanics and that everything needs hooking up properly. Was the starter motor connected up properly?

Anyway the first port of call for cutting out should be the fuel pump under the car and the in tank fuel pump. also the relay should be checked over too.

Then i would guess its worth checking the metering head. Though as far as i am aware Kjet systems are usually quite reliable.

Its a right mess :o

He told me he has had two fuel pumps and still no joy.

The starter is wired up fine, no power down there.

He has even said that he has has clifford come and look at the alarm and they have given it the ok but the mess with the wires is no good, fues box and all is hangging out :-[

Well it sounds to me that he needs an experienced auto electrician to rewire it. Sounds to me that the faffing around could have dislodged some of the earths located behind the fuse box and at other key parts like on the gearbox casing. Failing those areas i would try putting in another fuse box. With this sort of problem there will be no easy fix. Its a matter of checking all connections in a meticulous manner.

did he ever have it running to begin with??

first thing id do would get the alarm stripped out of it, or at least make sure its defo disconnected

then as said its just a case of working through everything bit by bit

id give it one good go at getting it sorted. then sell it if i couldnt

I said to him the other day it was best to get it rewired and then sort out engine side of things. I know for a fact that he will need a new dizzy cap as that crack when the plugs flew out :o

Not sure what he going to do with it, hope he breaks it in a way ;) but it would be a shame.

So sugestions are:

Get it rewired then sort out the engine prob but rewireing it might even sort that out.

How much do you think it would set him back for that (rewire)?? should he take it to VAG or get auto elec man to sort it out??
