Fitting downpipe to 1990 8v GTI
« on: 15 August 2003, 15:37 »
A question for those more mechanically capable than myself:

How easy is it to fit a downpipe to my 1990 8v GTI. Is it a big job and how do you get it on? Is it just from underneath or from the engine bay and underneath?

+ a couple of unrelated questions to let me drive with peace of mind:

1. The ignition coil has 3 electrical fins coming off it. On my car only two are being used. What is the 3rd for?

2. When cleaning my valve cover the other day i noticed that on the cabin side of the cover fastened down with one of the valve cover nuts was metal bracket with an electrical connector (with nothing coming off it). This is not the earth connector as this is on the far corner. What could this be for?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

 :)

Underneath, and the studs sometime snap off :'(.

Unused.

Earth for engine/dash for a more acurate reading on temp or other displays? Anyone?

Most of the time its not worth the hassle changing parts of the exhaust yourself. Quite often the nuts(especially underneath the car) are rotten and very difficult to get off. If you do want to do it you might need a blowtorch to heat up the nuts or you may not. Be prepared to spend all day doing it. Probably only about ?50 labour to get it done at the garage.
