clicking in reverse???
« on: 20 October 2009, 17:41 »
Just noticed today my gti has started to make a clicking noise when i reverse??? it sounds like a worn cv joint on full lock. Any ideas, the car goes into all gears with no trouble at all, never jumps out of gear and i am not sure what it is.

Mine does this too, its just an old gearbox/diff i would say.

When it does it going foward when you let off the gas, then its a problem. lol

Had the same problem on mine, took it in to get looked at. Was told, it is the gearbox but as it is only in reverse there is no point doing anything about it as it could last for years (five in mine) as reverse has such low mileage use. My box eventually gave up last Christmas due to bearings in main drive not reverse, got it reconned and no more noise now. Basically I was told "don't fix it if it is not broke" yet!

be careful my 1 made the same noise before it went bang and i ended up with a mega repair bill , my advice is get it checked out or u might end up with a £500 gearbox rebuild on ur hands

Depending on the box, yours may have a bearing on the top, accessable via a hex-socket IIRC

Its used to hold reverse gear in place and stop it popping out - if this is worn then could be making the ticking noise

Worth a check if you have it - can't remember the box number but had it go on my old Golf

Cheaper and easier option than a gearbox rebuild!
