front light problems
« on: 14 October 2009, 21:38 »

Slowley getting all the little problems out of the way with this car. Now I have to tackle the front lights...The lights are dim, when you hit the high beam, the dips go off on one light etc.....I am aware that there is a 99.9% chance that this is down to bad earths, so I have cleaned up any in the engine bay, but it really made little difference. Am I correct in assuming that the earths for the front lights come from the fuse area, via the left and right looms ? and are the headlights relay controlled, or god forbid, all the current is switched via the light switch and the stalk. I did run a earth from the battery to the rear of the  lights, and while this restored the high beam, the blue high beam LED stopped working,if I remove the make shift earth it works, but the lights still misbehave in the strangest way. One final note, one of the horns is disconnected, and this comes off the same loom as the lights, and shares a common earth (which goes back to the fuse area)

Grab a multimeter, test for 12v all round (on dip/main/side), then fit an uprated loom - ground it to the slam panel, inner wing etc.

No point fixing the crappy old wiring when you can upgrade ;)

Been through the lights with a meter, getting about 8 volts, so as you can imagine the lights are yellow not white. The loom seems in excellent condtion, and if possible I would like to repair / fix whats there. Is the positive feed for the lamps relay driven ? ( i did seem diagrams for  new modifed looms using relays)

Thanks for that, I'll run through the fuses in the morning. Still dont know if the lights use a relay, if they dont I would be tempted to use the power at the back of the lights to trigger relays, and just take fresh power from the battery, via a new set of fuses located behind the lights (it would be nice all the same to have it working without the need to modify whats already there)

the lights dont have relays, except front fogs.

best to make an uprated headlight loom as you say, its a common and popular mod on MK2s :)
