under car rust
« on: 03 October 2009, 18:33 »
Hi all

Just discovered some under car rust while trying to sort out my rattly heatshield on the manifold.
There is rust on the rear offside jacking point and the nearside front jacking point which I could nearly pull a large lump of floor off, are these notorious places on a MK3?

My MOT is due in November so not long to wait and I'll get the welding done but are there any other places on MK3's that are notorious for rust?

Just so I can check and get it sorted.

Cheers guys
Tom

I just had my mot the other day (failed on afew things) nearly sorted now, just need a brake pipe. (on monday)...

Anyhow, the tester told me he was suprised at how good the condition my P reg was in (body and engine) and found no rust, which in his experience in testing mk3's he found that the sills are a bad area. So worth checking them mate.

hope this helps.

Those jacking points seem to crop up on these..my fronts are a bit mashed  likely by hap handed previous owners..there's a bit of rust there which i've just covered with underseal to help protect the area but the jack isn't safe on there as there's hardly any lip left to locate onto..

Thanks people, the rest of the car is pretty solid, just some little cosmetic body rust here and there but nothing major. These 2 patches worried me but otherwise apart from them and the exhaust needing pulling apart and re-sealing I think it's ok otherwise. Only just got it and never had a mk3 before so it's a bit new to me.
Always been a mk2 owner for the last 5 cars.
But apart from the rattling heat shield and the fact it's an 8v, I'm loving the mk3

Rust is rust, old cars rust.

Just get it sorted before it becomes more of a problem.

Anything is fixable with enough time and money.

If you want to be fussy, pull the rear numberplate off as mk3s rust behind there like you wouldn't believe so worth checking.

Thanks bud, I've got a replacement tailgate to fit after the cold weather (so a long time away) as the tailgate on the car is like a seive. there is some cosmetic stuff on the drivers door too but not to bad.
Having major trouble getting the right colour paint off the shelf for small touch-ins (it's a yellow colour concept) but when I do I will sort the door.
I have a bit above the windscreen too that needs sorting. not loads but a few little bits on the car.
