I live in a band F area which is supposed to be the highest risk of car crime and I've never had to prove a standard immobiliser !

I had to for both the Golf and Bmw.

I recently found out of a special button somewhere in my car, that activated and deactivates the immobilizer for my car, sadly I can only activate/deactivate when in the car as I have no fob with a button to remotely do it but at least I know if I'm in a dodgy area I'll be almost safe in the knowledge my car won't be gone in the morning lol!

I'm insured with Highway through Adrian Flux and wasn't requested to prove immobilizer, only insured TPFT mind you.

you'll find the std immobiliser isn't insurance approved so they won't need proof of that!! and some different co's require more security before giving cover... either try another insurer or get a cat2 fitted for around £100 with the cert (which should lower your excess too)

and shady you may need to prove your factory security was working before they pay out on a theft claim!! (my old gti had toad security with cert...but I needed to post the cert to them in a theft claim before I would of being paid, but with the satt I had to sign a form saying the cat1 security (o.e) fitted works 100% and if they find it doesn't they can refuse to pay!)

Take my advice......for £100-200 you can get a decent certified security system that's much better than vw's own as golf's are easy to get into and with the correct know how the immobiliser is weak!! (and if you don't and your car gets robbed then hard luck!)

Good advice. Thanks very much.

Do you guys have any recomendations for a £100 - £200 Immobaliser and Alarm? Also, what's the difference between the Cat 1's, Cat 2's, Cat 3's etc..? Sorry for being a noob, I've just upgraded to the GTI from a 1972 Beetle, so all of this is somewhat new to me!

Well if I was unlucky enough to have my car stolen I'd be screwed then...but hopefully touch wood it won't. That being said, I'd like to get a proper alarm system in the car if I'm keeping it for the long run, so will obviously get something that is Cat1/Cat2. Cheers for the advice though.
