Mk3 Brake Disc Usage?
« on: 30 September 2009, 17:42 »
Hi everyone,

Just took my car to tyre specialist as the rear tyres seem to be going down pretty quickly (one side to 6 bar in only 2 weeeks) :(

He had a good look and showed me a number of worrying things:
  • ROS Shock Absorber seems to be leaking
  • RNS Tyre is worn to the cord at the inner edge of the tyre but rest of tred fine
  • ROS Tyre has a bulge on the inner side
  • Front discs dont seem smooth / flat surface upon feeling them
  • Rear discs are not in full contact with brake pads

MY first question relates to the last point. Basically there is rust on the outer half inch surface of the rear brake discs. He says something about the pad probably being replaced but not the discs and as a result worn down and there and not making full contact. Not sure what he is on about but to me it looks like whoever had the car before me has fitted inccorect pads which are not wide enough to make contact with the whole width of the disc, as it is the same on both sides.

Does this sound fair?

Secondly by having the ROS Shock absorber leaking and as a result faulty, would this cause excessive inner edge wear on the opposing tyre? I am worried that ill get the shocks sorted and replace the tyres but they will still chew up wasting money.

I was quoted £98 inc VAT all in for the supply and fitting of 2 new shocks. Is this fair price? Brakes and pads i'll do myself but havn't done shocks before and that price doesnt seem much more than me buying the parts alone. (Golf Mk3 Gti 8V 96 reg)

Thanks in advanced guys / gals

Shocks price fair.

Yes a faulty shock can cause tyre wear.

Will have to do rear bearings along with discs.

Really? Why do i need to do barings at same time?

Another question is it normall for the outer 2cm of a rear disc to become rusty?

Because the bearings are an integral part of the disc and you pull the bearing apart when you take the disc off.
