Thanks for all the suggestions,
In the end i decided to go for the boot polish again with the foam end and after a couple of coats it came out quite nicely
and it was cheap stuff from asda better than being bent over by the tw@s at halfrauds

+1 for boot polish. I've been using this for the last 6 months with no problems. No running, and lasts for ages.
I use Morrisons brand 89p liquid scuff remover with foam applicator, not that cheapo Asda stuff
