front Brake disc warning light
« on: 15 September 2004, 22:11 »
Today i replaced the bulb that had blown behind the digital clock on the back of the dash. I noticed that a couple of the instrument warning bulbs were missing one was for glow plugs which i havent got as its a 16v gti. The other was for brake disc wear when i put a bulb in it doesent go off with the rest of the warning lights. Did all gtis have brake disc wear light as standard or as the owners manual states it was optional, i have only just got car and am wondering if previous owner had removed it or it simply was never there any help appreciated. The brakes by the way seem fine

I have the same problem and spent days trying to fault find with no joy.

I solved it by taking the bulb out.

As long as you keep an eye on the disks you dont need this gimic!!!

Probably find the light is for the brake pads not the discs

All 16v gtis and late vr6s had brake pad wear warning lights.  I would imagine that they would only work with vw pads as they need to be wired in.  Check your pads are vw and look for a wire.

If the pads are non vw chances are the system is not plugged in and the light may be on because of this.   Previous owner probably fitted other pads and got fed up with the light so got rid of the bulb.

A VR6 isn't a way of life, it's just a car.
