Problems after changing a gearbox
« on: 29 August 2009, 11:14 »
So I changed the box on my mk1

Whilst it was off I took the flywheel off to have a look at the clutch which was brand new. I put it back together and then put the new box on.

Now when I drop the clutch it makes a horrible grinding noise, if I select a gear and then release the clutch it does nothing.  Have I put the clutch back together wrong?

How did you line the clutch up.

by eye

The gearbox that was on it was a 2Y (mk2 16V)  and the box ive put on is a FD (mk1 1.6 GTI).  Will I now have the wrong clutch/flywheel?

If the box fits, the clutch is lined up enough. it only needs to be close enough that the box physically bolts on, then the 1st press of clutch pedal perfectly aligns it.

However, alignment isnt your problem, you haver the wrong clutch/gearbox.  2y box has a larger input shaft than the 8v boxes, so the splines on the 8v box wont engage the 16v clutch. Gearbox off again I'm afraid :(
