starter prob
« on: 29 August 2009, 14:58 »
Hello again, latest in a string of recent problems with my beloved mk3 is on start up. The starter engages properly (i.e the solenoid is working fine and the pinion is not worn) and the engine turns over and starts normally, but on releasing the key (de-energizing the solenoid) theres a "rattling and grindy" sound for a few seconds then all is normal. I'm guessing the spring loaded return to disengage the pinion is sticking a bit, if this is so, if i remove the starter is there any way of spraying some WD40 into it to free it up a bit? I have a feeling that a new starter will be required but its always good to check. Also if anyone feels there is an alternative fault please let me know! In addition, with ref to removing the starter, on many cars its quite a straightforward job (2/3 bolts and the solenoid feed & high current cable) is there anything extra i might like to know with regards the mk3?? Thanks in advance for any advice!

What engine do you have?

I had the same problem on my first 1.4, and my nan also had the same problem with her 1.4.. if you have a 1.4 also then I reckon it's just a common problem and nothing to worry about.

Without knowing what engine you have then I couldn't tell you how to remove the starter motor  I changed the starter motor on my 1.6 the other day though, so if you have a 1.4/1.6 then I'll definately be able to explain

Hmm no idea then mate sorry.

The only cars I've worked on are 3 1.4's, a 1.6, a 1.8, 2 1.9TD's and my VR6

Wouldn't have thought it'd be any different to any other starter motor though, 3 bolts and the usual wiring

The return spring is in the solonoid. I used to service starters. If you remove the starter you can remove the solonoid (two screws) and clean the plunger thats inside, make sure the lever is pushing the little cog that engages the ring gear then reasemble
