66k service?
« on: 02 September 2004, 17:43 »
oright all.

time for my service but bit confused. got my belt changed at 60k but not a service. at 66-67k it is time for 1yr service and the motor (mrkIII gti 8v) has done about 10k within that year period. i spoke to the local 'vw specialist' i know whose worked on the car before, and they quoted me 150 quid or thereabouts. he said they'll change ignition leads etc, oil/air filters etc but.... just spoke to main dealership and they said all it needs is a oil filter change at 6 quid.

what should be expected to get done around this mileage?
does it need to get the leads done, new spark plugs etc or just get the filters changed?

cheers in advance folks.

Well it depends on whether you have serviced it to the manufacturers spec all the way through.   I do about 10k miles a year in mine too - I tend to get a full service annually (= about ?150 by local VW specialist) and get the oil cnad filter changed in the 6 months between.  So every 6 months I replace the oil, every 12 months give it a decent service.   I'd check your service history for the last time you got all the ignition leads / filters changed - I wouldn't bother doing it if they were done less than 15k miles ago, but that's only my opinion.   I certainly don't get mine changed that frequently!!

The most important thing is to keep the oil fresh - old oil can ruine the engine quickly, and it's so cheap to get an oil change.   Sounds like you've had the cambelt (and tensioner I hope) changed at 60k miles, so you're OK there too.

Dunno how old your car is, but I doubt that you have had it serviced as per VW spec all the way through, in which case ignore how many miles it has on the clock and look when it last had a decent service!  That's the important thing.

Cheers
