Airflow meter
« on: 01 August 2009, 01:47 »
Hi Guys,

I've found my 8v GTi somewhat underpowered since I bought it. I have read through the forum and the airflow meter seems to be a common fault. I have tried unplugging it and it now runs much better. I've heard that it is meant to run rough without the airflow meter but mine seems ok. Can I expect the engine to become much smoother if i fit a new airflow meter?

I'm sure that if you unplugged the MAF and it was better then the MAF is gone.

Got the same problem but f**k dont get 1 from vw there dirty theifing basterds and charge a fortune and its the same story with the likes of gsf, europarts and unipart they want around £100 to £140 plus £25 to £40 until you give them your old 1 so the chances are the 1 your buying is a recon and not new.
There on ebay but you need the right part number because theres sheet loads on there

If running ok with it unplugged then it is knackered, don't run it with it disconnected however as will return poor mpg.

If its disconnected, its running at default or base settings.

As the others have said, you have solved your own problem right here.  I got a Hitachi MAF from GSF for £100 all in with the exchange.

Mine came from the local bosch agent and cost £68 (exchange) with a proper gaurantee.... could save a few ££ on the dealer prices
oh and as these are a common issue buying used is very dodgy!! and don't clean onw yourself unless your an electric wizard with the correct stuff (electrical contact cleaner is all you need tho )

I agree but most scrappys will exchange or refund if dodgy and on ebay you run the risk of neg feedback if you sell a dodgy one and describe it as good but as you say no long term guarentee

So are these Bosch  agents all over the country then? If so I'll swap mine there. I did take mine out to see if there was anything obvious broken. The two what look like thermal resistors were clean and intact so I'm assuming there is some kind of integrated circuit chip in the little black box which are busted for whatever reason. The box looks sealed so I haven't tried to open it.
