Is the 8v GTi rev limiter 5000rpm??
« on: 01 August 2009, 11:15 »
Alryt guys im selling my 1997 mk3 golf gti 8v and had a viewing today, went out for a drive with the potential buyer with him driving and he pointed out that the engine was hitting the rev-limiter at 5k and seemed to think this was not normal and it should go all way up to the redline....

Bein fairly new to mk3 ownership i was always under the assumption that this was normal ?

Could someone in the know clear this up, would be much appreciated.thanks

No the timing is out and it is in safe mode.

Rather than start ANOTHER new thread about this.

Would this show up as a fault when using VAG-COM? My 8V GTi hits the limiter at 5000rpm(but otherwise seems to run fine...), just had it hooked up to VAG-COM and the only fault code that it found was the ABS sensor. Presumably if the ECU was in safe mode due to the timing being out it would have told me somewhere? I only ask because I can't be arsed fannying around with the timing in this weather if it turns out not to be that!

Cheers.

Yeah, I'd had a good search, just couldn't see it mentioned anywhere if it'd show up as a code:D

Guess I'll have to take a look if it ever stops tipping it down, some summer eh!

if you have already had the codes read and nothing came up, the next step i would say is have gander!!
if its an old belt may as well get a new cambelt kit and start from scratch!! worth a try!
