Thanks to the super helpful reply I got to my first thread here about my heater problems, I've got a load more. Many thanks to anyone who can offer any advice, and I hope it's not taking the p*ss to post so many queries at the same time   :)

Anyway, my car is a G reg Mk1 GTi Cabrio, totally standard except for Konis all round. No power steering, but does have the hydraulic hood.

1- Anyone know what makes the glass in the doors rattle, or what needs replacing to stop it? The driver side window glass is much looser than the passenger side - if you close the door with the window half wound down, or drive on bumpy ground, you can hear the glass knocking around a bit.

2- It's got a very noisy fuel pump - I know there are other threads saying this is normal, but when you start my car you hear clicking from the pump, which speeds up then stops, but soon develops into a pretty loud noise, somewhere between a whirr and a whine ;) Haven't driven it enough to be sure, but I think it's worse the emptier the tank is. If it's dying, and needs replacing, is it likely to be the main pump, or is there an in-tank pump in my car too? If so, should they both be replaced at once? And finally, are the new pumps they sell at German and Swedish proper quality ones, not 3rd party nonsense?

3- How easy is it to fit a new back window assembly into the hood? Mine has some rust around the edging, which I don't like the look of.

4- Any tips on how to quieten a rattly clutch pedal? Or is it just natural play caused by wear and tear over time? I'm on a quest to make this Golf nice and quiet inside the car, and hearing a clink of metal whenever you put your foot to the clutch pedal sounds kind of cheap... :)

5- Assuming I can find one (anyone selling one here?) a new interior carpet, is it a nightmare job to fit? and will a carpet from any era Mk1 Cabrio fit my car? The previous owner cut away some of it for his very poor ICE install, which now makes it nearly impossible to get the plastic rails and clips along the bottom edge of the door area to get a grip on the carpet and hold it in place.

6- Very mild pinking under hard acceleration - what's the most likely cause of this? Timing, plugs or is it more likely to need de-coking of some sort?

Phew...! That just about covers it!

Cheers ahead to anyone who can help out :)

Will.

if your using regular (standard) octane unleaded 95ron, then this will cause pinking under load if you are using around 98ron then the igniton is too far advanced.
either use 97/8 ron unleaded or an octane booster. or retard the ignition slightly (this will cause a slight loss in performance).
with the windows is the rubber seal in the runner missing or damaged?

hello

you can buy a new carpet from america do a search for rabbit cab carpet sets, cost around ?120 bare in mind you need to add the the cost to bring it over.

If you can wait a few months you can have mine, grey i am affraid, reason i am changing mine though is the same reason as yours though some wannabe hero pulled the passenger side carpet up and tore the black edging material. if you can afford it best buy new second hand ones especially from tin top ones usually have the tread section worn off.

fitting wise is very easy you just need to take the seats out and they come out using an allen key and a cross head screwdriver the rest of the carpet is held in round the edges simple to remove.

unfasten your door cards and you can tighten the mechanism the vertical rollers near the locking mechanism may be worn, you might find it is loose or the bracket which holds the the underneath of the glass when it is in travel is loose or worn. with your window wound down half way it will rattle a little.

fitting a new back window is a pain in the arse as the roof skin is stappled into the bakelite insert within the roof frame, only change this if your changing for a new roof or at least get someone in to do it, the roof is very easy to tear and you will need to replace the two material straps at the top of the frame as these will need to be cut to get the old one out.

noisy fuel pump could be your lift pump in your tank, if it is starved of fuel it causes the external pump to whine. you can buy them from vw they are made by VDO. check your fuel pump relay, fitting a cheap krapper one instead of a vw causes the the fuel pump to whine louder.

power steering the yankies had as standard on the later cabs along with airbags air con and all the trimings. You can have it fitted by TSR for under a grand, IMO you dont need it.

you won't get a cab super quiet inside, old cars do rattle and make noises thats part of owning one. I sprayed all the inner panels of the car with wax oil that has removed most of the drumming sound if you tap the body panels, the doors slam without the postman pat van sound now.

Answer to Question 3.

Dont bother unless you're replacing the hood.

The Hood is stapled to the a Plastic insert that is bonded to the metal frame.

I had a rusty window frame too and its probably becasue the hood is leaking. Get a new hood and fix the frame then.
