Had a problem with getting the pump & sender out, wouldnt turn anticlockwise. Gave it a tap tho ontop with spanner (not hammer :P) and has worked better since, although still lurches a little. Seems definite that its crap in the tank, just need to find somewhere to do the work now. Going to buy a stainless filler neck, for the longer life. Just really annoyed that I cant even find a garage that are competant/knowledgeable enough to sort these problems :(.

Glad your getting somewhere with it, mine started 5 mile away from the sellers home and I was so close to taking it back and getting my dosh back, I see loads of mk1's especially later clippers and GTI's at knock down prices because they have running issues.

Most are cars that have had new carbs, pumps etc but rarely have their tanks drained or renewed.

True, that and/or mangled electrics.  :cry:

I know all about that, I had the buzzer going behind the dash(got sorted as a result of engine rebuild). Had wipers going by themselves as and when they wanted. Would love to have a garage to work in, and I would replace all the wiring. Shame really.

What would you guys recommend for me draining the tank(time, items required, etc?) and also, if I take out the sender/lift pump, will there be a chance of damaging the sender seal?

JOY!

Took my car back to the garage, fought my corner and insisted that the mechanic take a look to see the lift pump. Sure enough, he looked and found it. Got him to replace lift pump and clean crap out of tank, now there's no lurching and no squealing from the main pump.

Thanks rj for help, and you other guys for advice :)

I think I will continue to use them, now they respect my authoritaaa!!

I will just have to make sure that they do what I tell them, as opposed to whatever they want.

That is until i get myself a garage, then it's all in my hands:)
