8V Gti intake manifold

Hi guys,

Started to strip down my head in order to take it off.

Just got a quick question about the bolts for the intake manifold. Managed to get 4 off no problems at all, however the last two on the right hand side of the block I am unable to get to. Whats the best way of getting to them? Will it be easier from underneath?

I used an allen key bit from a screwdriver set that fitted into a 1/4" socket, which you can then use a socket wrench with extension on.

don't need a new intake manifold do you? have a cleaned and sprayed one going  :wink:

ps. wait until you get to the exhaust mainfold bolts, they're lots of fun!

Any tips on the exhaust mani bolts? I've gotta take mine off two engines soon.. :(

Cool will give that ago. Typicly I have miss placed the correct sized bit for my screw driver! Will have to do some hunting.

Got a can of Plus Gas for the exhaust manifold should ease the nuts nicly

I got all of them off bar 1 now. I found most of them fine but they did take the stud out with the bolt so going to have to sort that out. 2 of them I needed to hammer 11mm sockets on as they had warn away too much to get a 12mm on them. The last nut is the one under the second exit on the right hand side. It feels like its warn away and there isnt enough room to get a socket set in because of the down pipe being so close. Soaked it in plus gas last night so fingers crossed it will come off fine.

That one's always a git. i ended up hacksawing it off as it was rounded too much. should get new studs and nuts anyway so don't worry about them being stuck together.

check the mating surfaces on the exhaust mani are flat against the gaskets. i didn't and had to take it all apart again as rusting meant one didn't seal properly  :lipsrsealed:

managed to get the little so and so off with a pair of mole grips! Was rather slow going but at least its off! Going to replace them with brass nuts as they shouldnt rust to the manifold.
