Changing ignition barrel and key on gti
« on: 24 June 2009, 21:49 »
Hi my mates golf gti 8v ignition barrell has gone and hes broke the key with the little black chip has also gone, ive found somebody local whos breaking a vr6 mk3 golf, we are planning to swap the barrell over from this to the 8v.

My question is, will the vr6 key, recode up with the immobiliser system using VAG-COM adaption bit or will it be one of those SKU dealer things?.

or if they are the same, shall i get the black immobiliser box from the vr6 aswell?
MK3 GOLF GTI 8V  now converted to 16v!!

I believe you can recode the chip.

One bit of advice, I had to do the same job on my 8v and it was easier to change the complete inner column, took around 2hrs i total.

you need to swap both the key and the transponder box over, these both can then be recodedc to the ecu with vag-com. adding a different key to the transponder box is a VW only job.

as wayne says due to the spline adaptor you're better off removing the wheel & stalks, then undo and remove the bolt holding the column to the UJ at the base, then pull the whole column out in 1 piece with the lock housing attached.
