Changinf the timing belt on an 8v 2.0 GTi golf

Talk about do my head in............

Took car for an MOT on Saturday and the garage phoned me up to say that it ran out of petrol.  Strange I thought, knowing that there was £10 worth of fuel in there already.

Anyway, I go to get the car and put petrol in it................
Still not start....................
Ending up having to move the dizzy round by about an inch to get it to fire and run.


Timing belt teeth missing, I thought so decided to change the belt and tensioner.

Can I undo the bottom pulley..............NO BLOODY WAY.

ANY IDEAS HOW TO LOCK UP THE CRACK PULLEY TO GET THE 19MM BOLT OUT??????????

but the questin really is  why do you want to undo the 19mm bolt  you do not need to undo it to change the belt

Will the timing cover come off without undoing this?

Will undoing the 4 hex nuts release the pulley wheels?

I checked the timing belt and I cant see any teeth missing in the timing belt and thought that maybe the woodruff key has f**ked up or something.

Cant work out why the car ran spot on before the MOT and then it cut out, wouldnt start and I had to move the dizzy around by an inch to get it started.

Any ideas as to why this happened.

Thats odd...  Woodruff keys dont usualy cause a problem, unless its a diesel in which case the rattle them selfs to death but thats not going to be the case, Could it have slipped a couple of teath?  I would get the cambelt on ASAP and see how it goes from there, dont forget to line the dizzy back up.

Sounds like its just about to go, dont use it/turn it over till you have done it...........

Are you saying that the woodruff is about to go or the belt?

The car has been standing for atleast 18mths, not a great way to treat a timing belt but it is what it is.

Good job the engine didnt smash to pieces on the high speed idle test in the MOT!!

Still need to know how to get the lower timing belt cover off though.
