Pulleys wont line up
« on: 12 August 2004, 10:36 »
Alternator belt sapped on the 16V so took it to local garage for MOT and change belts as the car has been lying for a while.

They have told me that they can't put new belts on as the pulleys dont line up. The boy I bought the car off insists that nothing has been changed in the 5 years they have had the car?

How can the pulleys not line up properly?

It had a woking belt on when i bought it.

sounds a bit weird, in what way are they not lining up??

there is two types of belt so makesure they are using the correct belt.

id go and buy one from VAG then you know you've got the correct belt

Seems like they do line up after all.

Looks like it was just an excuse to cover up the delay in servicing my car!

Your garage may have been right, i have a similar problem on my 8v, the water pump pully doesnt line up with the pully on the jackshaft.
water pump>alternator is inline.
the btm pully is inboard by 2>3 mm.
glad i'm not the only1 with this strange problem.
Does yours have a pressed steel btm pully or the heayduty cast type with rubber insert??
will measure both in morning and post any results.
woody :)
