Hi all
Turns out that the top bolt holding the alternator to the mounting plate was loose (RAC man said he's sees this a lot as there's a spring underneath it and some mechanics think the alternator needs to bounce up and down on it!)
Anyway , on the M40 when the bracket sheared detaching the alternator, and belt to the water pump - so things got hot rather quickly, splitting the expansion tank & generally making a right old mess.
Have been quoted around £300 for a new moutning plate & associated parts which seems a bit steep. Anyone know a decent breakers / parts shop round Richmond or Brighton way to pick one up cheaper?
