OBD1 Vr6 into an OBD2 8v
« on: 05 June 2009, 20:22 »
Im putting a VR6 engine into a mk3 8v, which is OBD2. It already has the 288mm brakes etc, so its just an engine, box, pedal box, clocks and loom jobbie.

My question is if i buy a obd1 engine to fit, will this give me problems, as the car currently is obd2 with the 8v engine, and the other systems, like the abs are obd2, although im aware they have their own ecu.

Just wondering if i used an obd1 engine and ecu, it would cause me issues or not?

Ive been offered a sub100k engine, with a rebuilt gearbox, and all ancillaries for a good price, so providing i can use it, i will!

Cheers

Mike

I'm sure the engine loom is a simple plug into the existing wiring and won't affect your brakes.. i would ask rubjonny and his expertise in all things vw

Yeah, i dont think it would effect the brakes.

But im thinking that if i use a obd1 engine, in a obd2 car, there might be some compatability problems with the abs ecu, and fuse box? Possibly different plugs into the fusebox?

Not too fussed about the less diagnostic capabilities. Its tempting me due to the rebuilt gearbox, the mileage on the engine, and the price....... ;)

If i was you mate i'd hold out for obd2 engine, the obd1 engines have the weaker chain guides so you would deffo need to have these done plus it would be much easier compatability wise since obd2 would deffo be plug n play.

Also it really pays to have the better diagnostic capabilities of the obd2.

Obd2 engines consistantly put out more power standard then obd1's, many examples of standard engines putting out between 180-190 bhp.

Yeah, i have been reading up on VR6OC mate it seems they say what you say. The OBD2 puts out more power.

So im going to find an OBD2 engine, but im still going to have the gearbox off him, as it has been rebuilt. So at least i know i wont have problems there. I plan to clean/paint all of the parts, and replace everything, chains, pumps etc etc before it goes in.

But i want / need more power. lol

Cheers :)
